Worldbuilding Ideas For New Stories

🜂 800 meters below the steppe, a city has been running for 30 years.

OSKERATH — an underground salt cathedral city built 800m beneath the Altai Steppe, where 2.6 million people live inside hollowed halite mountains lit by bioluminescent crystal formations that pulse on a 17-year cycle. Last cycle, Chamber 4 went dark instead.

OSKERATH The Salt Cathedral Beneath the Steppe.
Eight hundred meters down. Nine chambers. Two and a half million people. No one has seen the sky since 2031.

They went down because there was nowhere left to go.
The Kazakh Surface Collapse Accord signed in 2029. Within eighteen months, three governments were drilling.
OSKERATH's first chamber sealed in October 2033. The surface camps were abandoned two years later.

The Nave — the central cathedral chamber — runs 400 meters wide.
The salt columns are 180 meters tall. They were here before anyone arrived. The city just learned to live between them.

The Alcove Markets run 24 hours on crystal-clock time. There's no sunrise to track.
Children here have never been cold. The bioluminescent light runs constant — warm and amber, like the inside of a lantern the size of a mountain.
9 chambers. 3 salt markets. Free crystal access for every resident.

Every 17 years, the crystals pulse brighter.
It's the only calendar that matters here. The cycle is the clock. The clock is the city.
Last year, Chamber 4 went dark instead.
The reason is not on record.
